Origins
The name “Mianane,” meaning “eight hundred ” in Kiswahili, reflects this spirit of collective strength. It symbolized completeness, balance, and the idea that no single artist stands alone. From the beginning, Mianane was imagined not just as a studio, but as a creative ecosystem.One that blends commercial work with cultural production, and individual expression culminating in community growth.
Mianane Studios was born out of both necessity and belief: the necessity to survive as creatives in an ecosystem that undervalued artistic labor, and the belief that African stories are strongest when they are built collaboratively,shaped by shared experiences and mutual support. We believed that when artists work together across disciplines, backgrounds, and skills, their work gains depth, resilience, and relevance.
The origins of Mianane trace back to around 2021, when a small group of Fine Arts and Design students in Nairobi found themselves navigating a familiar contradiction. On one hand, we were being trained to think deeply, create boldly, and imagine freely. On the other, the realities outside the classroom were stark: limited opportunities, poorly paid creative work, exploitative commissions, and a persistent narrative that art was a “side hustle” rather than a viable profession. Many talented artists around us were either burning out, abandoning their craft, or being forced to work in isolation.
Mianane emerged as a response to this gap.
